Casemiro’s header and a Marcus Rashford goal gave Newcastle too much to overcome in their first League Cup final appearance since 1976. United last won a major trophy during their 2017 Europa League campaign, but they looked confident in their performance against Eddie Howe’s team.

It’s been an incredible time, and we’ve already won the first trophy of the year, but Bruno Fernandes remarked, “But we want more; it’s not enough for this club; we want more and we need more because our standards require more.”

I am satisfied, but I want more. I want much more. “For me, it was about winning trophies, and finally we did it.”

There weren’t many clear-cut opportunities in the hectic opening minutes, but United took the lead on 33 minutes when Casemiro, a solid midfielder, scored the first of two quick goals, causing mayhem in half of Wembley. Brazil’s international player skillfully flicked a header into the far corner after Luke Shaw’s stooping pass from a wide free kick was delivered.

Six minutes later, with the momentum in their favour, United increased its advantage when Newcastle’s Botman assisted Rashford in scoring on his own goal. Rashford was played into the back by a charging Wout Weghorst. As United strengthened their hold on the trophy, Botman deflected the 25-year-attempt old’s from a tight angle up and over the stretched Loris Karius.

Although being initially deemed an own goal by Botman, the goal was eventually changed to be given to Rashford, giving the England international his first final goal in seven appearances.

With a well-placed shot from a distance in first-half stoppage time, Weghorst again came close to scoring, but Karius, who made his first start since February 2021, was up to the task.

The second half saw Newcastle make a stronger but toothless comeback, with Joelinton getting the closest but seeing his shot expertly blocked by Lisandro Martinez as United easily sealed the victory.

Newcastle manager Howe remarked, “No issues with how we played, obviously the scoreline doesn’t show that, and that’s where football can be cruel. “I’m sorry we were unable to satisfy the supporters today.”

During the trophy presentation, Newcastle’s supporters dispersed after creating a sea of black and white with free plastic flags on the west side of the stadium during the final minutes of play. The team has now dropped all nine of their games played at Wembley, a streak that started with the 1974 FA Cup final.

Bruno Fernandes raised the trophy, which Man United supporters believe will be the first of many under Erik ten Hag, to loud cheers from their supporters.

The first season under the former Ajax boss has been better for United. They are still in the Europa League draw and currently sit third in the Premier League. Since Jose Mourinho left Old Trafford, Ten Hag is the first manager to do so.
